Who we are
Yorkshire and Lincolnshire 4x4 Response is a volunteer group, using 4x4 vehicles to assist the wider community in times of need. We are affiliated to the National 4x4 Response Network, which is made up of similar groups across the UK.

As our name suggests we cover Lincolnshire and North, South, East and West Yorshires. This means that we offer support over an area that is one sixth of England with a population of 5.6 million people. Although we have over 80 members, we are still looking to increase our membership. This is so that we can improve our response times and offer continuous support when required.

In extreme circumstances we can draw on our neighbouring groups in North West 4x4 Response, 4x4 Response North East , Peak 4x4 Response, Nottingham 4x4 Response and Rover Rescue and indeed from other groups across the country if required, in the same way that we provided support in the Gloucestershire floods in 2007.

What we do

We offer assistance as required by user organisations, such as Police, Ambulance, Doctors, Local Authority etc. This is often in extraordinary circumstances, such as extremes of weather, such as heavy snow or flooding.

We typically perform a variety of roles, including the relocation of people or equipment, access to areas that could not be reached by standard vehicles, or recovery of stranded people or important equipment.

Our members

Membership of Yorks Lincs 4x4 Response is open to anybody who is willing to help. You do not need to be an experience off road driver, or even own a 4x4. To operate successfully we also need a network of supporters, fund raisers and other volunteers.

If you do own a 4x4 it also doesn't have to have any special modifications either. The nature of the assistance we give means that the bigger variety of vehicles, the better we are able to send a vehicle that is best suited to the task in hand.

Members have access to training to the highest standards in offroad driving, first aid, winch work & vehicle recovery. The training sessions also help us to ensure that every member is trained to a known standard and helps us to operate safely in what can often be challenging conditions.

Other activities

The group has an active social side and while the principle aims of the group are very serious, we try to involve the whole family where possible. We have monthly open meetings (see the forum for dates and locations) and regular green laning trips and events such as camping weekends where children and other family members are welcome to come along. We also attend a number of 4x4 shows both socially and to promote the group.

We are also keen to promote responsible use of 4x4 vehicles. We expect members to keep their vehicles well maintained which increases reliability and efficiency. Membership of the Green Laning ASSociation is encouraged, but it is a requirement within our group rules that members adhere strictly to the GLASS guidelines to minimise the impact of Green Laning. In the past we have assisted GLASS in the upkeep of some lanes by removing litter, dumped electrical goods and rubble.
